| Check back July 19 for new puzzles and activities JUNE 2010 Summer's here and it's time to get outside and have some fun but remember to leave yourself some quiet time to rest and think. Draw a picture or your own comic book on the sidewalk: You can buy regular chalk or sidewalk chalk at Dollar Stores. Keep a memory book: Before you go to bed, write down the best things about each day. Write a story about the best day each week. Add photographs if you have them or draw pictures to go with your writing and stories. This will be nice to read in the winter or on rainy days. Hold an outdoor art show: Ask all of your friends to bring their artwork: paintings, drawings, photographs, collages, etc. Hang a clothesline or rope between two trees or anywhere you can tie it. Pin the artwork to the rope with clothespins. Have everyone invite their families and friends. Garden: If your parents have a garden, ask them if you can plant something for yourself. You can ask for seeds for flowers, herbs or vegetables. Start a collection: Collect leaves from different trees and find out what they are. Collect the same leaves in the fall when they have changed colour. MAY 2010 Print & Colour pages t Double-click on the images below to download the PDF colouring pages.

Add water until it's an inch over the eggs Bring to a boil over high heat Boil 10 to 12 minutes Remove from heat and rinse under cold water until they're cool Note: You should always have your parents permission or supervision when using the stovetop. Colours: Mix the dyes according to package decorations, dip the eggs in and let them dry. If you don't have store-bought dyes, you can use food colouring with a drop of vinegar or else natural grape juice, beet juice, tumeric spice and instant coffee powder for purple, dark red, yellow and brown. Design Ideas 1. Draw on the eggs with wax crayons before you dip them in the dye 2. Wrap rubber bands around the eggs before you colour them to make them look tie dyed. 3. Supplies: 1 c. ground cinnamon 1 tsp. allspice 1 tsp. ground cloves 1 tsp. nutmeg 1 c. applesauce Rolling pin Skinny straw to punch hold for ribbon or Wire Thin red or green ribbon. Mix dry ingredients. Add applesauce a little at a time until the mixture feels like playdough. If it's too dry, you can add add 1 or 2 tablespoons applesauce. Roll the dough out 1/4 inch thick on an ungreased surface -- it should roll out without cracking. If it's sticky, sprinkle it with ground cinnamon. Cut your favourite shapes out with cookie cutters. Punch a small hole or insert a loop of
wire at the top of the ornament. Leave it on a on level surface to dry 4-5 days. Tie a ribbon through the hole
or wire. Makes 20 to 24. MAKE YOUR OWN SNOWGLOBE Here's an easy craft that also makes a great gift. Supplies: Glass jar with tightly fitted lid Small waterproof ornament or figurine (you can make your own) Mineral or baby oil* Fake plastic snow, glitter or crushed clean eggshells Craft paint & paintbrush Marker Hot glue gun 1. Read the instructions all the way through before you start. 2. Paint the jar lid with coloured craft paint and let it dry well.3. Hot glue the ornament to the inside of the jar lid. 4. Fill the jar with water until it's about 3/4 full. You need to leave enough space so that the contents won't overflow when you add the lid. It's best to do this with water as it's almost impossible to get a good seal if the jar overflows with oil. 5.You can add a little more water if there's too much of an air space. When you're happy with the water level, remove the lid and mark the water level on the outside of the jar. 6. Drain the jar and lid and let them both dry completely or overnight before step 6. 7. Fill the jar with mineral oil to the level you've marked on the outside. 8. Add one teaspoon of glitter or snow. 9. Put a layer of hot glue around the inside of the jar rim and quickly screw the lid tightly onto the jar. 10. Turn the jar upside down after the
hot glue has dried and leave it for a few minutes to test for leaks.11. Shake it and enjoy! *You can use water with a tsp of glycerine instead of oil if you'd prefer. CHRISTMAS GLITTER ORNAMENTS You can make your own inexpensive but beautiful ornaments with materials from any dollar store. Supplies: Plain coloured or clear ornaments Glue Glitter Draw your own designs in glue on the ornaments. Shake or sprinkle on glitter and let dry Here are some shapes that might look nice: ![]() GREAT SUGAR COOKIES Set your oven for 350 degrees. Stir 1/2 cup unsalted butter until creamy. Reroll the scraps until all the dough is used up. Bake in 350 degrees Fahrenheit. 15 to
20 minutes until lightly browned.Remove from oven and cool on cookie sheet 5 minutes. Move the cookies to a cooling rack and decorate as desired. SCOTTISH SHORTBREAD (Easy) This is an easy recipe that tastes great. Stir 2 cups softened butter until creamy (not margarine or shortening) Add 1 cup packed brown sugar and beat well. Add 4 cups flour and stir until evenly mixed. Press into a square pan and score (make holes) all over with a fork. Bake in 325 degrees Fahrenheit 20-25 minutes or until lightly browned.
